Top Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Yelp - http://clapway.com/2016/01/16/top-ten-things-you-didnt-know-about-yelp/

Yelp is a great source for restaurant reviews, but there are facts that you probably did not know.

FACT 1: THE TRAFFIC

Most of the traffic coming from Yelp is not from smartphones, as so many of you probably thought. In actuality, around sixty percent of all of the traffic is from home PC’s. This may change in the future, but for now, desktops are still in control.

FACT 2: THE BIGGEST CATEGORY

If you thought that the biggest category in Yelp was restaurants, then you are sorely mistaken. The biggest category is actually shopping, as said by the Yelp manager. He did say, however, that this perception does still linger.

FACT 3: YELP DISCOURAGES ASKING FOR REVIEWS

The Yelp manager actually stated that they recommend that people do not ask for reviews on their site. Instead, he says that they should focus strictly on awareness, instead of reviews.

FACT 4: FLICKR

A shocking revelation about Yelp is that they actually provide downloadable signage via Flickr. The best part about this, though, is that it is free.

FACT 5: THEY PAID FOR REVIEWS

A while back, this company actually paid someone to write a review. The CEO stated in 2007 that they did this to try and get the ball rolling on their website.

FACT 6: CUSTOMER SERVICE

The company actually did some research and they discovered that customer service is more valuable than any other asset. They say that if customer service is praised, then the likelihood of a five-star review is multiplied by five.

FACT 7: REVENUE

A study was held by a professor at Harvard Business School, and they found that every time a review gets, at least, one star, the revenue jumps up five to nine percent.

FACT 8: INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES HAVE THE ADVANTAGE

The same professor from Harvard also took part in another study. They found out that Yelp does not favor chain restaurants like McDonald’s. Instead, they cater towards individual businesses.

FACT 9: OWNERS CAN DISPUTE REVIEWS

If a customer goes on Yelp and makes an unfair review, then owners of the restaurant can dispute the review. As a matter of fact, the manager for the company actually recommends that owners do this.

FACT 10: THE STREISAND EFFECT

This fact ties in with the last one, in that Yelp, cautions owners from slandering the customers. They do recommend they dispute reviews, but not in a disrespectful way.
