If you grew up playing video games in the ‘90s, you are most likely very familiar with Final Fantasy VII, hailed by about half the generation as the greatest Role Playing Game ever made (the other half declaring that title for the game’s successor, Final Fantasy VIII, causing contentions between gamers for decades). Up until now, FFVII has only been available on PlayStation consoles or PC computers. However, Square Enix has been hard at work porting all of the Final Fantasy games over to iOS devices over the years, and they’ve finally arrived at Final Fantasy VII, giving true fans a chance to play one of the most beloved games in the series anywhere they like.
FFVII: A Classic You Can Take Anywhere
For the price of $15.99, which is the standard price for Square Enix’s high-end games on iOS, you can take Cloud on adventures with you wherever you go. The game, however, does take up 4GB of space. If you’ve never played this iconic game before, now you can see what all the fuss was about and why so many of your friends were so adamant that Final Fantasy VII was better than Final Fantasy VIII.
The cult classic follows the adventures of a young mercenary named Cloud Strife, who ends up joining the resistance group AVALANCHE to prevent the megacorporation that rules the world, the Shinra Electric Power Company, from sapping the planet of its life to use as an energy source.
However, if you’ve been waiting for this day to come and were expecting some sort of graphical upgrade or optimization for iOS devices, you will be disappointed. This version of FFVII is based on the PC version of the game, so the graphics will be the same as before. The iOS version does come with a few tweaks though.
A Cheater’s Final Fantasy VII
Back in the day, when the game was first released on the original PlayStation, people had much more time to sit around for hours on end being fully immersed in the FFVII world, grinding out levels in random encounters and battling tough bosses. However, 18 years later, it seems that Square Enix developed this iOS release specifically with today’s fast-paced, instant gratification generation in mind.
The iOS version of Final Fantasy VII comes with a “max stats” option that allows you to level any character up instantly so you can get through tougher battles more quickly. It also allows you to turn off all random encounters, so that you can explore areas completely without being interrupted by random fights every few seconds. This helps you push the story along and get to the boss battles much faster.
Final Fantasy VIII Coming Soon?
If you are among the other half of the generation that grew up playing video games in the ‘90s, then you know that Final Fantasy VIII was the most epic RPG ever made. It’s likely that you’ve been waiting for the day that your beloved FFVIII comes out on iOS too. With the release of FFVII on iOS, it’s only a matter of time before this happens. In fact, if your FFVIII nostalgia is waxing high right now, Square Enix has allowed you to treat some of that nostalgia with the release of their Final Fantasy Portal app. The app serves as your hub for all Final Fantasy mobile news about any releases related to the Final Fantasy universe, including any merchandise, books, and special events.
The app allows you to collect points daily by logging into your Square Enix account. You can then exchange those points for different rewards. It also enables you to download and play the original Final Fantasy for free, so you can see where it all began. The greatest news about this Portal app for the Final Fantasy VIII fans, however, is the release of Triple Triad, the beloved and much sought-after card game from FFVIII. The game, which fans of FFVIII have been asking Square Enix to develop for iOS for many years now, has finally been released on iOS devices through the Final Fantasy Portal app. Final Fantasy VIII fans can take that as confirmation that Square Enix is indeed planning to someday release an iOS version of the most epic RPG of all time. In the meantime, they can prepare for the eventual release by watching the FFVII iOS release trailer here, and then playing Final Fantasy VII on their iPhones and iPads, and reinforcing their position that FFVIII blows FFVII out of the water.
