A mysterious cloud, visible from many cities, was seen on September 16 in the sky over Costa Rica. Lucky residents who witnessed the spectacle in the sky grabbed their phones to take pictures and share them on social media with the hashtag #ElcieloExtraña, which is Spanish for “strange sky.”

The skies opened up to a luminous cloud formation unlike any people had ever seen before. Witnesses were left wide-eyed and amazed, some even interpreting it as the “end of times.”
Joey Pitt told ABC News that he and his family were at the playground for Independence Day when his 11-year old first spotted the cloud in the sky.
“He immediately grabbed the camera and started taking video and photos,” he said. “We were just so amazed. We had no idea what it was and we’d never seen anything like it.”

There Is A Scientific Explanation for Everything
As much as people may have wanted to believe the mysterious cloud was the “hand of God” or some surreal happening, experts say there is a logical explanation behind it. Science can a downer like that sometimes.
According to scientists, the mysterious cloud is known as “pileus” or “cap cloud.” These strange clouds occur in rain showers when the sun’s angle is low on the horizon.
Eladio Solano, a meteorologist with Costa Rica’s National Meteorological Institute stated, “It’s caused by the sun’s light being refracted by water droplets and ice crystals in the cloud.”
They usually appear in the first stages of a thunderstorm and are a sign that a strong one is on its way. You have to keep your eyes peeled because a cap cloud does not stick around for very long.
The Connection Between Clouds And UFOs
The sky event in Costa Rica is not the first time people have mistaken a mysterious cloud or cloud formation as something more extraordinary. In fact, lenticular clouds, which are lens-shaped, are often the reason behind reports of UFO sightings. Mammatus clouds, on the other hand, appear powerful and enclosing when viewed from below, and have surely caused some to believe the end of the world is coming.
