Whether or not you’re health conscious, it’s safe to assume that you already know the dangers of consuming too much sugar. Sugar laden foods have been associated with a variety of diseases or conditions, such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease. Yet, most of us continue to consume these products, without much after-thought. Now, a new review of study literature is spelling out exactly why we all should permanently ban soda.

THE BREAKDOWN OF SODA AND SUGARY DRINKS

According to the study, now published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, consuming one or two servings of a sugary drink per day raises an individual’s risk of heart disease by 35 percent, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 25 percent and the risk of a stroke by 15 percent.

Although added sugar, usually found in the from of high fructose corn syrup and sucrose, is found in a variety of food products, the major source of it comes from sugar-sweetened beverages, according to Frank Hu of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health: “Our findings underscore the urgent need for public health strategies that reduce the consumption of these drinks,” he states.

Today, half of the U.S. population consumes these types of sugary drinks every day; one in four get 200 of their daily allotment of calories from the source and 5 percent get over 500 calories. The problem is that liquid calories aren’t filling and resultantly, people begin to gain weight over time.

Moreover fructose does not behave the same way as other sugars when inside the body. It heads straight to the liver, where it is then converted into blood fats known as triglycerides. Overtime, this can lead to insulin resistance, which is a leading cause of diabetes and heart disease.

The easiest and most obvious way to combat these issues is to gradually wean off of the sugary drinks – whether they are artificially sweetened or not: “If you’re drinking a 20-ounce bottle of soda a day, try a 12-ounce bottle instead. If you’re drinking two sodas a day, try one,” stated Hu.
