Every year, over 1 million wildebeests, 200,000 zebras and 500,000 gazelle make their mass migration though East Africa in pursuit of greener pastures. Largely considered one of the great wonders of the natural world, this event unfolds annually, sometime between July and October, starting from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The journey, which runs in a clockwise circle spanning 1,800 miles, has attracted people from all around the world. Now, for the first time in history, the mass migration will also be broadcasted live for our enjoyment.

THE WILDEBEEST MASS MIGRATION STRAIGHT TO YOUR LIVING ROOM

Make It Kenya and HerdTracker have teamed up to provide live feeds of the event twice a day through Periscope and YouTube. The broadcasts, each 10 to 20-minutes in length, will be available until October 5th.

To partake in the virtual event, users must register their e-mail address with HerdTracker, which will send notifications to remind viewers to tune in. According to Carel Verhoef, the cofounder of HerdTracker, the broadcasts help “those who may not be able to witness themselves the spectacular events that unfold in the Masai Mara, and to showcase to the world the specular event that happens each year in Kenya.”

The live feed will also feature commentary by experts, during which viewers will be able to ask questions that will be answered in real-time: “It’s that Lion King moment brought to life,” stated Herdtracker’s Andre Van Kets.

YEP…THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT

Although there are some general movement patterns of the animals, the precise timing of the mass migration cannot exactly be predicted and varies every year. For this reason, HerdTracker, with the assistance of pilots, safari guides and rangers, has also created an app to track the location of the wildebeest migration in real time. As a safari guide himself, Verhoef has often seen people miss the entire mass migration altogether due to unfortunate timing and a bit of bad luck. “We just keep a tab on these things every day and it makes it a lot easier to find them the next day,” states Verhoef.
