Samsung News: Samsung is giving Apple a really great Christmas present this holiday season after losing a long running dispute on the theft of some iPhone patents. A total of $548,176,477 will be paid to Apple in damages, and an additional $382 million is still in debate to cover for the claims that Samsung copied the iPhone’s packaging materials.
Technology Patents Cost Samsung Nearly One Billion Dollars
Samsung has agreed to pay the first part of the settlement, but it maintained that it has the right to get the money back as the case progressed. On the other hand, Apple has declared that they are ready to appeal before the Federal Circuit court.
Last month, Samsung had requested a hearing to review the damages award in the dispute, but new information on the Apple patent has led the Federal Circuit Court to reject the request.
Samsung News: Lawsuit Has Been in Dispute Since 2011
Samsung has declared that they will pay the damages costs 10 days after Apple delivers an invoice to Samsung, and the additional $382 million in damages is scheduled to be disputed in 2016.
It hasn’t been a complete loss for Samsung though, as they were able to confirm the claims that Samsung stole the ‘pinch to zoom’ patent from Apple, but Apple has claimed that they intend to appeal that decision.
Tensions Between the Companies is At An All Time High
Both of these companies are notorious for protecting their physical and intellectual property, but it looks like Apple has the upper hand for now. Samsung has raised a kind of white flag for now, since they were using a small part of some Apple patents. It’s still to be seen just how the courts will continue to deal with this case, or if it’ll escalate to the Supreme Court.
It’d be hilarious if Samsung paid Apple in nickels, as it was rumored and then dispelled in 2012. Only time will tell.
