Why Mental Health is So Undermined - http://clapway.com/2015/11/21/why-mental-health-is-so-undermined/

Mental Health Isn’t Taken As Seriously as They Should Be

People in the world have an easier time understanding an allergy than they do anxiety. The stigma regarding mental health is especially relevant now, where depression and anxiety are both prevalent in society but are seen as ‘phases’, and easily curable. The truth is, mental and physical health issues are not the same and should not be seen as the same.

Physical Diseases Are Thought to be More Weighted than Mental Ones

Physical diseases have a fundamental advantage over mental health issues in terms of obtaining compassion – we all feel pain physically. If a person were to grumble about a cut finger, it would not be difficult for another person to empathize, since they’ve probably felt that pain before.

Psychological illnesses do not manifest themselves in a concrete, identifiable area within people’s physical bodies, there is no simple way for people to put themselves into an emotionally ill individual’s footwears. Therefore, apathy is achieved much more quickly. With time, this has brought people to believe that mental illness is a lesser evil than physical ones. People think that others with mental health issues are either just like everyone else, or a maniac.

Mental Health Issues Are Everywhere Around Us, And They Can’t Be Ignored

Psychological health and wellness problems affect numerous amount people, and to varying degrees. One can’t give the same treatment to someone who has a paper cut with someone who’s stepped on glass, and similarly, the same medicine that cures migraines will not cure depression. The stigma of mental health lies here, where people refuse to see that mental health, addiction included, isn’t something that can be ‘fixed’ like an injury. It needs therapy, and it needs time.

Mental

The stigmatization of psychological wellness would likely be decreased if clear lines are drawn between situations of unusual changes of state of mind and tension. This is the case especially for illnesses that go under the radar or situations where mental illness are chronic and debilitating, as well as cases that fall somewhere between. By doing this, even more people would understand that the discussion of psychological health and wellness must not just be set aside for those with incapacitating, noticeably recognizable health problems.
