Some people thought Trump would take the title this year, but Time Magazine has named German Chancellor Angela Merkel Person of the Year this time around. From being a leading figure in matters concerning Syrian refugees and handling the Greek debt crisis, Merkel has shown true solidarity and good politics.

Merkel Was Recognized for Challenging Putin’s Vendetta Against Ukraine
The chancellor was renamed Chancellor of the Free World, for being an advocate for great causes and calling for justice in places where it was lacking. This year she was the subject of headlines three times, all for positive reasons. As such, Time named Angela Merkel Person of the Year.
Merkel isn’t a perfect politician. She is a demanding leader, but she stands against tyranny and fights against it too, and has shown great leadership morally. Merkel, only 61, is the fourth woman ever to be featured as Person of the Year. The last one was Corazon C Aquino from the Philippines in 1986.
Angela Merkel Person of the Year Gets Fire from Donald Trump
Although Donald Trump was one of the finalists to become Person of the Year. He’s been dominating headlines through the last half of 2015, but not for any good reasons. Trump didn’t take too well to not being chosen, either.
He took to Twitter to express his displeasure: ‘I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite. They picked person who is ruining Germany.’ Quite a mature move. Other candidates were Caitlyn Jenner, for being a voice for the transgender population of the world, and Hassan Rouhani, President of Iran.
ISIS Leader Could Have Won Person of the Year
What’s even more, surprising is that the leader of ISIS was also a runner-up, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. This wasn’t for good reasons either, but for being able to inspire thousands of people to engage in killing and torturing and rebelling and becoming jihadists.
