#Facebook vs. #Twitter on the news front. Who gets your vote as the source for your breaking news? - http://clapway.com/2015/08/12/facebook-to-compete-with-twitter-with-new-breaking-news-app-245/

Facebook has been in the news quite a bit as of late — mostly in regards to testing new ideas like its giant drone that will spread free Wi-Fi over certain parts of the world, or testing out their new storefront. Now, it looks like Facebook is getting ready to compete toe-to-toe with Twitter as the company is looking into developing a news application that functions quite a bit like Twitter.

Not So Fast

It’s definitely true that a lot of people rely on Twitter for announcements and breaking news, but there are a lot of other social features that allows users to interact with each other. The Facebook app that Business Insider reported about is more focused on the business nature. That means users won’t necessarily be interacting with each other, and they won’t be creating content either.

Instead, Business Insider suggests that the app will be a “broadcast-only experience.” Facebook will only be allowing partnered companies to produce content. Users will follow various topics they are interested in and receive instant alerts that are limited to 100 characters — slightly less than Twitter’s 140 limitation.

Facebook Hopes to Clean Up the User Experience

One aspect that Facebook hopes will give it an advantage over Twitter is reliant on how Facebook’s new app, currently in alpha, will curate posts better. Information about the app is still pretty vague, but Facebook is hoping that news won’t dissipate into the social masses as quickly as it happens on Twitter.

Facebook believes that this provides new users with a bad experience since the more people they follow, the faster their Twitter feed moves. Some users may never see a post on Twitter unless the tweet is retweeted by someone else or the original tweeter, but with Facebook’s new app, news will stay relevant for longer.

Facebook Is Trying to Stay Relevant

We’ll know more about Facebook’s new app as the company gets ready to share more details about it. This app is just the latest addition to the company’s rapidly expanding suite of apps that it hopes will help maintain its relevancy moving forward. Facebook also owns Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

#Opdivo could be the godsend of #kidney #cancer. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/20/could-this-drug-change-the-treatment-landscape-for-kidney-cancer-112/

An independent data committee recommended the trial testing of Opdivo be stopped early, after it concluded the drug was found to be beneficial in patients with the most common form of kidney cancer. The medicine nabbed an OK, raising hopes that it could improve the lives of patients with advanced renal cell cancer.

Immuno-oncology: a ‘breakthrough’ in cancer therapy

According to the company Bristol-Myers Squibb, surgery, radiation, cytotoxic or targeted therapies have represented the pillar of cancer treatment over the last several decades. Long-term survival and a positive quality of life, however, have remained elusive for many patients with advanced disease.

To address this “unmet medical need”, the company is leading research in an innovative field of cancer research and treatment known as immuno-oncology, which primarily works with the body’s immune system to fight the disease.

These kind of therapy belongs to the broader category of medicines referred to as immunotherapies. Scientists have been studying the role the immune system can play in fighting cancer for several decades, and believe that these methods represent a ‘breakthrough’ in cancer therapy.

Opdivo, which has already been used to treat advanced melanoma and a form of lung cancer, belongs this highly promising new class of drugs.

Could Opdivo redefine cancer treatment?

The full data will be unveiled at an upcoming conference, but the company stated that Opdivo is the “first checkpoint inhibitor to prove itself in a kidney cancer trial”.

“The results of CheckMate -025 mark the first time an Immuno-Oncology agent has demonstrated a survival advantage in advanced renal cell carcinoma, a patient group that currently has limited treatment options,” said Michael Giordano, senior vice president at Bristol-Myers Squibb.

“Through our Opdivo clinical development program, we aim to redefine treatment expectations for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) by providing improved survival.”

Kidney cancer in the United States

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is considered the most common form of kidney cancer. According to the American Cancer Society around 90 percent of all kidney cancers can be attributed to it. Most recent estimates for the disease in the United States show that about 61,560 new cases of kidney cancer will occur in 2015. About 14,080 people will die from it. This risk is higher in men than in women.

This #medical #nightmare has to be put to a stop. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/19/dr-abracadabra-fake-doctors-strike-again-234/

While most health providers are legitimate, there are many fake doctors that are completely bogus. Unaccredited, unregulated ‘phony’ doctors, are criminal scammers for the most part, who cold-bloodedly exploit the credulity and desperation of the most vulnerable people in society: terminal patients.

Fake doctors are in vogue

Dr. Abracadabra- Fake doctors strike again -- ClapwayIndeed, fake medical degrees are so prolific that have become an “urgent national problem.” If twenty-five years ago, a Congressional committee calculated that there were over 5,000 fake doctors in the United States, just imagine how many more there are now. People have died because of these mockups. Something must change.

Alleged chemist arrested in California

The latest incident was reported in California. Here, an alleged chemist who claimed he could treat cancer with alternative medicine scammed a mother out of thousands of dollars, police say. According to news reports, the victim identified as Fern was upset to witness somebody preying on cancer patients “who are desperate to live”.

The battle of a cancer patient

Fern has been battling breast cancer for seven years. Despite years of chemotherapy, the cancer spread. She decided to turn to natural treatments and in 2009 found a website promoting Vincent Gammill’s “Natural Oncology Institute”. It was her last resort, she thought. She believed the doctor had answers to her problems, but he didn’t. Gammill was no guru.

The first visit cost her $2,000. She was given various prescriptions that were all expired and had to listen to comments “that didn’t make any sense”.

After her visit, the mother of two contacted the police. “He robbed me of my money, of my time. It was three days driving up, I was away from my children and my family,” Fern told 6abc Action News.

It turned out that Gammill had no formal education beyond high school. In his home, investigators found laboratory equipment and bottles labeled corrosive and poison, along with over 25,000 prescription pills, including morphine, Ambien, steroids and Mexican and Russian drugs.

The Big Lie

The “Natural Oncology Institute” is still online. Here we read that Gammill became well known in international clinics “for the effectiveness of certain cancer vaccines he developed”. His aim was to create a non-profit where “cancer patients could get a honest answers from someone who knew both conventional and alternative medicine without sizing up their wallet”. Right.

Gammill, 69, who was arrested on July 9, is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Aug. 31.

Over the years, organisations such as the California medical board has investigated a mounting number of people pretending to be doctors and offering risky treatments, including a San Francisco man who performed liposuction while smoking a cigar and a San Diego woman who sickened a patient with lengthy IV infusion treatments.

Fake doctors and unlicensed physicians are everywhere in the US. Check out this page for more stories. Have you ever met a bunch of fake doctors? Share your experiences in the comments section below.
